The unveiling of the nifty looking Nano by Ratan Tata has drawn lots of comments, unfortunately ,the focus seems to be on issues other than the car itself,ie,
Politics,
Infrastructure overload,
Adverse impact on Environment,
Safety of the vehicle itself.
Well being generally disillusioned with the way politics is conducted in our contry, less said the better. Nonetheless,I feel that in the long run the people of Singur and WB in general stand to benefit.A lot has been said about the issue of Singur and Buddha Uncles handling of the issue,so that aside I'd like to focus on the simple yet pertinent issue of providing jobs to the youth.Projects like these are guaranteed to generate employment ,both in the organised as well as the unorganised sector, something to do with agglomeration economies and the downstream effect.Obviously, this doesnt happen in a day,and shall take about 5 years or thereabouts to really make a significant impact, and ,if the TATAs are wise(nothing to suggest the contrary) they would do well to ensure the training of local youths in selected fields to ensure mass support and a semi captive manpower pool. Iam certain that this project with its spin offs will have a positive impact for the common man.
Now the issue that the Nano will lead to further congestion of our road system.Well first of all the Tatas lack the wherewithall to churn out thousands of these people cars, but, why blame them? The responsibility for the road communication networks lies with the govts(centre and states),instead of taking our elected representatives and the numerous municipal/civic bodies for their shoddy, corrupt and inefficient work policies to task we are saying that the Tata Nano will overburden the already creaking system.Dammit, why dont we take the people who are actually responsible for doing these things with our hard earned money to shape up their act?
The planet is definitely ailing, but does it imply that we deny the fact that the Nano exceeds the current emmission norms by a large margin.Actually what our govt ,the corporates and we need to do is to take a very serious look into the time, energy and money that we are not investing in this problem! Our approach towards developing new tech and green energy is well behind the chinese and as usual we'll wake up late! These issues not withstanding, the introduction of the Nano is definitely not bad.
This car will ensure that millions of people who have stood on bus side boards in sleeting rain ,chilly winter or baking sun unsucessfully trying to shield their kids from the elements, will travel as a joyful and comfortable family unit, just like others who had bigger pockets.
Issues or not I for one ,unhesitatingly salute Mr Ratan Tata and his cohorts who have kept their promise to the Common man!!
