The unveiling of the nifty looking Nano by Ratan Tata has drawn lots of comments, unfortunately ,the focus seems to be on issues other than the car itself,ie,
Politics,
Infrastructure overload,
Adverse impact on Environment,
Safety of the vehicle itself.
Well being generally disillusioned with the way politics is conducted in our contry, less said the better. Nonetheless,I feel that in the long run the people of Singur and WB in general stand to benefit.A lot has been said about the issue of Singur and Buddha Uncles handling of the issue,so that aside I'd like to focus on the simple yet pertinent issue of providing jobs to the youth.Projects like these are guaranteed to generate employment ,both in the organised as well as the unorganised sector, something to do with agglomeration economies and the downstream effect.Obviously, this doesnt happen in a day,and shall take about 5 years or thereabouts to really make a significant impact, and ,if the TATAs are wise(nothing to suggest the contrary) they would do well to ensure the training of local youths in selected fields to ensure mass support and a semi captive manpower pool. Iam certain that this project with its spin offs will have a positive impact for the common man.
Now the issue that the Nano will lead to further congestion of our road system.Well first of all the Tatas lack the wherewithall to churn out thousands of these people cars, but, why blame them? The responsibility for the road communication networks lies with the govts(centre and states),instead of taking our elected representatives and the numerous municipal/civic bodies for their shoddy, corrupt and inefficient work policies to task we are saying that the Tata Nano will overburden the already creaking system.Dammit, why dont we take the people who are actually responsible for doing these things with our hard earned money to shape up their act?
The planet is definitely ailing, but does it imply that we deny the fact that the Nano exceeds the current emmission norms by a large margin.Actually what our govt ,the corporates and we need to do is to take a very serious look into the time, energy and money that we are not investing in this problem! Our approach towards developing new tech and green energy is well behind the chinese and as usual we'll wake up late! These issues not withstanding, the introduction of the Nano is definitely not bad.
This car will ensure that millions of people who have stood on bus side boards in sleeting rain ,chilly winter or baking sun unsucessfully trying to shield their kids from the elements, will travel as a joyful and comfortable family unit, just like others who had bigger pockets.
Issues or not I for one ,unhesitatingly salute Mr Ratan Tata and his cohorts who have kept their promise to the Common man!!
Close
but shruthi he has done something unprecedented, and, lets appreciate that
ciao

Dear MV,
I do agree to the facts enumerated by you, but, please tell me why should Ratan Tata only focus on the troubles? This is the responsibility of our elected representatives and also of all of us.So lets focus on what Ratan Tata has done ,ie,live up to his promise and talk of these issues at a later time

yes RATAN TATA has really made a revolution with nano. It really fulfilled the dreams of middle men and proved to be a commanmans car.But on the other side it add up to the problems like traffic, parking, pollution, etc.,but government should try to improve the infrastructure facilitites like parking and laying more number of roads.

While those responsible for road maintanence are to be blamed for their poor quality, even the capacity of good and even excellent roads are limited. There is somethintg like a saturation point. In Delhi for instance, over 300 cars are registered daily! flyovers are being built left and right but they are not able to keep pace with the number of cars going up by leaps and bounds.. Efficient public transport systems are what we need and not cars. Tata should have focussed on manufacturing large, low emission buses instead of cars.

What infreastructure? The AP Governement says it cares damn for the general public and it cares only for the farmers. What about the abysmal state of roads? Of the lives lost due to the non-development of the roads? Any one can sit and argue of the merits and demerits of focussing on agriculture but that does not mean one should ignore the other sectors. With just 0.5 % ( may be evn less)of the state's population travelling on the NH 9, more are killed on the road than the entire number of suicides by the farmers. And the buggers are busy in real estate business. Minting money their children might not enjoy due to a possible mishap (God Forbid!) on its roads.

Ratan Tata has delivered, delivered a true car not a glorified auto! I felt proud to see that car being driven into the show. If millions of 2 wheelers do not cause a crisis level problem on the roads why would a few nanos do! In any case let the people responsible take care of that. That is no excuse to stop progress.

Quasimodo,
What an intriguing pseudonym you have.......brings back visions of the famous hunchback, mostly Anthony Quinn and the luscious Gina Lolabrigida more so than the classic book!
Anyway, just wanted to say your comments on the Nano are very comprehensive covering the laurels to Tatas along with the very real fears that people have about hundreds of Nanos adding to the congestion on our already overloaded roads. But you are absolutely right, the powers-that-be that have been promising better infrastructure for traffic should be the ones who have to provide the answers. Thanks very much for your post.
